I appreciated your perspective. I love the idea of making Sundays a day of celebration. I’m not sure how the creation institution of one day of rest in 7 and the fact that a sabbath is part of the 10 commandments figures in, though. We don’t say, “Jesus fulfilled the Law, so I can do what feels like a blessing to me in the area of truth-telling or marital faithfulness. If those things feel burdensome, I’m doing something wrong.” The one-day-in-seven cessation of work is the commandment, just as not making idols or not murdering is. I agree with the rejection of legalism (law-keeping to earn God’s favor) and the blessing of the Sabbath (per Jesus’ teachings), but making the day whatever feels good to us or taking rests for an hour every day isn’t the same as the biblical pattern, and I’m not sure how to combine the two.

I do think I could have done a better job of explaining, so let me try here –
Because Jesus fulfills the Law, we have Him as our true Sabbath rest all day every day. The day of the week we choose to rest on is not to be a bone of contention amongst believers. Nor do I believe HOW we rest should stir up strife. Certainly, there should be a day that is different from your other days and allows for rest because the Lord knows we NEED that rest (often for us, that day is Fridays after the chores are complete). And I will never forsake the gathering of the saints on Sundays (the day our Lord rose from the dead!). My burden came from trying to create rules that made Sundays (or Saturdays) a day of rest according to what other people prescribed as “rest.” It was anything BUT restful. I have never been so stressed than when I tried to force my entire family into a Sabbath box. Resting in the fact that Jesus came to FULFILL all these rules and carry our burdens – even Sabbath ones – allowed for freedom I had never experienced before! I hope that makes more sense!
