A couple of years ago, I discovered store-bought peanut butter contained sugar. We began buying all-natural peanut butter, but that really adds up. So, we began making our own peanut butter whenever we could.
I used a recipe I found in a book I picked up in a bookstore in Colorado entitled: Make Your Own Convenience Foods
. It was full of all sorts of recipes, including the recipe I used for spreadable butter for years. The peanut butter recipe called for peanuts and oil, put in a blender and blended until smooth. However, like the spreadable butter, I discovered a simpler way to make this recipe. And simpler is almost always better in my world!
So, thanks to the advice from a friend, I started making peanut butter in this fashion…
- Spread 1 container of peanuts onto a baking sheet.
- Roast in oven set to 250 or 300° for about 15 minutes to pull oil from peanuts. {You’ll be able to tell the natural peanut oil is coming out by turning on your oven light and looking for a shininess on the peanuts. Be careful not to burn the peanuts!}
- Remove from oven and place in blender {I use my VitaMix}.
- Blend until smooth and creamy or chunky, depending on your preference. You’ll need to scrape down the sides and blade several times so as not to clog up your machine.
- Pour into a container {I use glass because this stuff is HOT when it comes out of the blender and will melt weaker plastic containers.}
- Store in container in the refrigerator for several weeks…if you can get it to last that long!
Yummy, all-natural peanut butter!

Do you know if this works with a food processor?
Amy says
I wouldn’t see why not. 🙂

Thank you AMY! I am so happy to see this! I am definitely going to try this! Thank you!

I made my own peanut butter once before but it didn’t taste the best and it was a lot of trouble. This one sounds so much simpler, I must give it a go sometime! 🙂
Quinn says
That is the best looking homemade pb I’ve ever seen!
Susan says
This may be a silly question, but when you keep it in the jar for a week or two, do you need to stir it each time you use it?
Thanks 🙂
Susan
Amy says
Interestingly enough, it isn’t at all oily like the ones from the store, so no, we do not have to stir it.

I never thought about trying to make my own peanut butter before, and I live on the stuff. I’ll have to try this out, it looks so yummy!

What perfect timing! Our family is moving in the right direction when it comes to making healthy changes, but we have a long way to go! Yesterday, as I was making a PB&J, I kept thinking that I need to just start making my own PB. I figured that it couldn’t be that difficult. Thanks for posting….looks super easy–I have no excuse not to try now!!
ps…stopping in from Works for me Wednesday!
Young Wife says
Wow! I had no idea it was that easy. I will have to give this a try.
Valerie says
Ok, I’m terrified to try this in my Vita-mix, I know it can handle it, but I’m worried I’ll mess it up …. How long do you process it and what speeds? Thanks 😀
Amy says
Valerie,
Start on Variable 3, slowly move all the way up, switch to High. Use your tamper to push the peanuts down into the blade. It takes about a minute and will be SUPER hot (you’ll be able to see when it starts flowing well through the blades). Empty it into your jar and leave a bit in the Vita-mix and make ice cream w/ the leftovers that inevitably coat the sides 😉 YUMMY!

Favorite ice cream recipe in your VM? 🙂
Amy says
Yes! Are you wanting the recipe? 😉
Sugar Mommy says
Will this work with other nuts, like almonds, cashews, or hazelnuts (for possible homemade Nutella!)?
Amy says
I’ve not tried those, but I think as long as you try not to tax your blender motor, you could definitely do it! I have made “seed”tella w/ sunflower seeds in this way, but they are pretty dainty.
Anita Ambrose says
I can do this! Thanks so much for sharing. Can’t wait to try.

Pulled this up off of momy’s per tina’s quote. i am planning on making this! so, we bought peanuts in the shell because they were so much cheaper. it says they are “roasted in the shell.” would you think i’d need to roast them again after we de-shell them like you suggest? does this make the pb very creamy? crunchy? we have kids that like creamy and some that like crunchy. can you make both? how can you tell? wishing you could just come on over and help me!! lol (i’ll be using a vitamix, btw). thanks for the help, amy!
Amy says
Hey Sue! You will need to roast them a little bit to get them warm and get the natural oils flowing freely again. 10-15 mins should be plenty and then vitamix them. If you want it crunchy, just don’t blend until smooth. Try to catch it before all the peanuts are crushed. And I would love to come help! lol
sue mitchell says
Ooooo, it was GOOD!!! 🙂 My dh actually did it for me cuz I’m such a Nervous Nilly about breaking my Vitamix. Next time we’ll make more because we know it tastes good! Thanks for the help! 🙂

I have never done anything like this before, but am trying to make the switch. We just ran out of regular pb, so I have a couple questions for you before I try this…..What type of peanut do you use? Raw, roasted, salted, unsalted? Any help would be great.
Amy says
I use raw. And I do like the salted, but not too heavily. 🙂
