There are some of you out there who would have thought this to be a pregnancy announcement had I not included the name “Inca” at the end of the title. I know who you are…don’t be shy. 😉
Who might this lovely new member be???
Why, a guinea pig, of course!
We thought we went shopping for a rabbit.
When we got to the pet store and saw that the rabbits were upwards of $30 a piece, we decided we were looking for a hamster.
The pet shop guy told us hamsters bite and that we were actually looking for a rat.
A RAT?!
My husband says, “NO, we are NOT looking for a rat!”
We were actually looking for a guinea pig.
The pet was for my sweet daughter, Megan. There were 3 guinea pigs to choose from, but my Megan knew exactly which one was for her…the quiet and shy little female. (I think she secretly hopes there will be baby guinea pigs in this equation!)

Animal lover that she is, she had already read up on guinea pigs and lead us around the pet store pointing out everything we needed. (Thankfully, we talked her out the designer guinea pig carrier and the guinea pig harness and leash!)

Our family spent the ride home tossing around names for this new addition. Should she have a people name? Should she have a name that pointed to her unique pink ear? What name sounds like a guinea pig?
Once again, my daughter came to the rescue with her wealth of animal knowledge. Supposedly, guinea pigs originated in South America. The Inca Indians kept them in their homes. So, our dear little guinea pig has been christened (no, not really) Inca. I think it is a rather lovely name, don’t you?

I love this. I really wish we could have a pet here, but the rules say no… 🙁
But, there is a guinea pig at our library. Her name is Dewey…cute huh? Anyway, Katie calls it the “bunny pig.” I think it is the highlight of her week to visit Dewey.

A girl after my own heart! I am an animal lover also. I once had a guinea pig also. Patches was her name.
I have to admit…I have two rats. After having hamsters and then rats, I would never have another hamster. Rats are so friendly! And you can train them. Even your daughter could do it! Mine would come when I called there names ( once I left the cage door opened and realized it while my husband, children, and I were off in the woods camping. When we got home 2 dys later…a quick call and here they came. I also trained them to do special tricks when they wanted a treat. They are quite sociable and love people.
If you can get past their tail…you could have a great pet!!! 🙂 IF it was ok with your husband, of course. He is the ultimate authority of the house.
Have fun with Inca…I hope she brings your family many times of happiness and smiles.

Sweet! We had a few of the critters before!
BTW….the best place to get a rabbit is the farm feed and supply
store. Rabbits are about $10.00.
The food and stuff is less expencive all the way around!
We made a fleece lined bag to use (like a mini sleeping bag) for the kids to put the critter while holding. Guinie pigs can be scittish and could fall from a childs arms. Their nails are sharp and the fleece bag alouds the younger kids to “hold” the critter and not have to squeeze it! or drop it from being scratched!
Have fun with your new pet and have a Awesome mothers day!
Warmly,
Georgiann

We LOVE guinea pigs. They are a wonderful pet. We actually did the whole male and female and little babies. We were even able to see the little pigs being born.
Hope you enjoy little Inca!
Blessings,
