Family Easter Baskets – Frugal & Fun!

When I was a child, I awoke every Easter morning to a basket outside my door filled with treasures nestled amongst pastel colored grass.  I would eat my fill of candy, don my Easter dress, and head to church with my mom and dad, often walking the 2 blocks it took to get there.

For many years, I recreated that memory for my own children, often leaving their Easter clothes folded neatly in the baskets outside their doors along with the candy and trinkets.  But, as we had more children, baskets lined the hallway, and small children were often found digging into every basket, looking for more than their fair share.  Plus, the cost of filling that many Easter baskets “fairly” was more than I cared to spend.

That’s when it dawned on me that the solution to this was a Family Easter Basket!

I filled a family-sized basket with candy and toys (all for sharing) and placed it on the fireplace for everyone to find in the morning.  We had so much fun sharing candy before church (just a little because no one wants sugared-up kids in a church service!).

Some years I only fill with candy, some years there are some individualized toys and treasures.  The kids still do an Easter Egg Hunt with Grandma, so I don’t feel bad that they don’t have their own Easter baskets, and I shouldn’t feel bad anyway – Easter isn’t about getting candy – it’s about celebrating our risen Lord and Savior!!!
