Our family enjoys fresh herbs.
My husband’s favorite homemade cream of mushroom soup calls for fresh thyme. My favorite salsa calls for fresh cilantro.
I always prefer to use fresh herbs in my dishes, but I can’t always justify the cost, nor the fact that so much would go to waste because the bundles they were sold in were too big.
That’s when I decided to start a kitchen garden of fresh herbs right on my very own balcony off the dining room!
What a treat! I have 2 large pots that I grow thyme, oregano, basil, and cilantro in. These are the 4 herbs I use the most.
It has been so much fun to simply step outside and grab what I need. No waste! And no expensive trip to the grocery store!
Looking back, I have no idea why I didn’t start a fresh herb kitchen garden years ago!
Oh, and every time I go out to pick herbs, I come back in singing
Pasley, Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme…

Love the kitchen herb garden. My regular garden is just off of my back deck, but I still have herbs that I keep in pots right outside my kitchen.
And, you are right — buying herbs at the store is ridiculously expensive. Especially when once they’re planted they start to grow like crazy.
Have a blessed day, Amy.

It looks wonderful Amy! I seem to have a black thumb and can’t grow anything! I might need to try again though! Your fresh herbs look delicious! Basil is probably my favorite! 🙂

Fresh herbs are the best! Do you bring your pot inside for the winter time to keep growing them?
Amy says
I probably will, but I just started this, so I haven’t had to go through a winter yet!

Excellent, Amy. I don’t know why I haven’t started my own. Need to do so.

Oh, I love my herb garden! Salsa with fresh cilantro is hard to beat…and fresh sage, chives, and thyme are so wonderful!
I planted these LONG before my lungs went crazy…haven’t really done anything to them in YEARS, and yet they come back every year, like old friends to say HELLO!
WELL worth the time!

OK, I have to admit my favorite herb is rosemary. Just smelling it makes me happy. I think I am addicted. I would put it on everything if my family wouldn’t balk.
Amy says
I almost got rosemary too, but ended up deciding to wait. We often put rosemary essential oil in the bathtub, so I share your love of rosemary! 🙂

For years I wanted a herb garden and finally have one. The woman up the road was kind enough to share some of hers with me. However I am not sure how to cut or pick them, any sites anyone can suggest? I have dill, thyme, basil, chives and oregano. I did try to do some research, but did not turn up anything helpful.
Amy says
No suggestions here…I just cut them willy nilly! 😉

How timely of a post! My mom just gave me a large pot that she filled with oregano, basil, and parsley. I’ve never really cooked with fresh herbs, but she talked to me about each one, how to use it, etc. So I’m really excited that I get to try something new in cooking!

I popped over from Rachel’s @ Finding Joy. I love herbs. I really like your simple idea – 2 pots, 4 herbs. Herbs really are that easy aren’t they!
We have an herb garden with mint and lemon balm. We dry them and save them in the freezer for a wonderful lemon/mint tea during the cold Iowa winters.
I think I’ll go find two pots….you’ve inspired me 🙂
