When to Quit, When to Take a Break
***********************************
After 6 years of blogging, you can believe there have been times when I have been burned out. There have been times when I’ve wanted to quit. There have even been times when I wished the internet would just go away!
There is so much good online, but there is also…
So Much!
A blog can easily overwhelm you to the point you wonder,
Should I quit?
Should I step away for a while?
Again, all of this is truly between you and the Lord; however, I want to offer you some thoughts to ponder:
1. How is your relationship with the Lord? Is blogging helping or hindering that relationship?
2. How is your relationship with your family? Is blogging helping or hindering those relationships?
3. Do you feel bogged down by your blog? Are you out of ideas or feeling like you are never caught up?
4. Is your blog taking an excessive amount of time? Do you need to streamline or drop some projects?
The decision between quitting a blog and taking a break is so very personal, there is no way I could tell you exactly how to make that decision. However, I will tell you, I bathe everything in prayer and bring my concerns and issues to my husband at all times.
Sometimes all it takes is a break to gain perspective and refreshment. Sometimes a blogging break needs to be permanent.
Want to start a blog?
Want to grow your blog?
Here are some wonderful resources!

That website sounds exciting! I’m not actively “schooling” but it will relate to more in a few years.

I do believe that breaks are mandatory in whatever type of “job” that you have. That is why we have vacations from traditional jobs because you can get burned out! I just came from a bloggers conference and a woman who blogs full time takes 2 weeks off during Christmas and 8 weeks off during the summer. She is also a homeschooling Mom. Even if you physically take a break, you can pre post so that your readers can stay engaged. I pretty much plan all of our family vacations at the beginning of the year based on budget and family activities. Gotta put God and family first!

Kathy,
Very good point! I take a lot of breaks, but it isn’t always noticed because I try to put posts in during those times and let the blog go on auto-pilot. It is very important not to live, eat, and breathe blogging. 😉

Hi I just wanted to tell you how much I appreciate the grief series. I was reading last night at midnight my time. I have not been able to sleep since losing our Jonathan. I am so thankful for you commitment to help other mommies. I am also so thankful for your honesty in your grief. I loved the mp3 for homeschooling during a crises it made me feel much better when you said God will fill in the gaps. This month has been one big Gap. Looking forward to your launch party on Tuesday.

Hi Amy I have just found your Blog through the post you had on The Better Mom blog. Your blog has been such a blessing in my life. I am a mother of three (8,5,2) & since I have found your blog I have been applying so much much in our lives I have created chore charts for my children & age appropriate chores. I am a working mother & really struggle with it but am just praying the Lord would guide me & place me where he want’s me. Sometimes I feel like I would be more holy if I stayed home so this post is a blessing & really spoke to y heart. Thank you for your faithfulness.

Thanks for this great series of posts about blogging. I am a Christian and a stay-at-home dad, and I have been blogging as a hobby, for something to unwind after a hard day taking care of my son or something to do while my son plays by himself. I have been struggling though, knowing that I have too much of the wrong attitude about the blog – pride, and making my hobby into an idol. I have been trying to find a way to give it the right focus, otherwise I know I’ll need to quit. But at the same time, I’ve been encouraged by being able to reach out with my Christian values to a few people through my blog. Your posts here were a great way to help me focus my thoughts. Thank you!
