Sunday afternoons around here are a treat. We always try to do something together as a family, usually at home. We reconnect with each other and we refocus on the Lord before we hit the fast pace of the next week. I’m always on the lookout for things to do that promote this.
A while back, I downloaded a copy of Modern Parables from Compass Classroom. All of their products are well done, so I was expecting quality, but never did I imagine how spectacular these would be!

Modern Parables takes parables from the Bible and puts a modern spin on them. I am definitely skeptical when it comes to taking anything from the Bible and “modernizing” it, but these short films did not skew the message.
So, one Sunday afternoon, I decided to treat the kids to one of the parables and see how they responded to it. We watched Hidden Treasure first because we had seen the trailer (you can watch it here).
The response?
My children sat riveted.
I sat riveted.
Not only was the cinematography fantastic, but the message was clear. Afterward, we pulled out the study guide and worked through the parable and how the kingdom of Heaven is like that hidden treasure form the film.
My kids begged for more!

Next, we watched Samaritan. I won’t give it away, but be sure to take note of the way the film used modern characters to bring home the point of the film. Superb!
We’ve been using these films and study guides for Sunday afternoons ever since, but honestly, the kids ask for them others days of the week as well, and they love to show them to their friends.
The films retail for $15 each or $105 for the set, but there are often sales where you can get each film for around $9 each or the set for around $65!
So, if you are looking for a fun activity for Sunday afternoons or a weekday afternoon treat or even a watch-this-while-mom-cooks-dinner, these are perfect!

Favorite parable – that’s kind of a tough one because there are so many . . . mustard seed (Mark 4) and lost sheep (Mathew 18) are 2 of my favorites.
Jessica says
Hello! Would love to win this–thanks for the giveaway!
Jessica says
Sorry, I forgot about the favorite parable but I can’t decide which is my favorite! But the one that has been in forefront for me lately is about Lazarus and the rich man (Luke 16:19-31), because we have a family member who belongs to a “church” (read:cult) that doesn’t believe there is a hell. And this parable is the first that comes to mind because they are words straight from Jesus’ mouth about it.
Kristin says
Probably the prodigal son.
Jane M. says
The Prodigal son in Luke 15….love this part..”20 And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him.
21 And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’
22 But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet.
23 And bring the fattened calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate.
24 For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.’ And they began to celebrate.”

The parable of the wise and foolish builders. I think Matthew?? It’s a great reminder 🙂
brittni says
The seed and the sower
Leah Williams says
They are all good, of course. My favorite depends on what is going on in my life. The one about the unjust steward. It reminds me that sometimes we build things slowly (I may be the only one getting that lesson ;-)) because we are proving wise stewardship over little before we get more. Maybe that’s why we are given children 1 or 2 (usually) at a time.
Inga says
I love the Good Samaritan. So much to learn from it. I also love the idea of another activity for them while Mom cooks dinner!
HeatherHH says
Looks interesting. I’d be interested in winning one. Not sure that we’d end up buying them at the price. Favorite parable is difficult…. I’ve found the Prodigal Son interesting since I read John MacArthur’s book about it several years ago, making the point that the focus of the parable which Jesus was telling to the Pharisees is not on the prodigal son, but on the older brother with his hard heart.
Jodie says
I love having discussion starters for the whole family. These sound really neat!

Liz says
I have been thinking about the parable on discipleship frim Luke 14:25-35, especially the part after the parable where Jesus talks about saltiness. I feel like it is so easy in this world to lose focus. As much as I desire to be more like Him and follow His examples, it is so easy to let the world distract me. I think I feel like all the true saltiness is difficult to retain sometimes. If we lose our saltiness and our walk and our words are not seasoned properly…well, just my thoughts.
Bonnie says
I am not really good with having just one favorite…of anything really, too indecisive for that haha 😉 but one of my favs; the prodigal son. A beautiful representation of the Father’s heart. God is good to us!

I love the one in Matthew 25 about the master who went away and left his servants in charge of his money “each according to his own ability”. One was given much more than another but the reward was the same for faithfulness. I sometimes wish God would not entrust me will so many “tallents” but I try to be faithful and not envious of Christians who have less responsibilities. God alone knows our abilities and our limits and assigns tasks accordingly.
