Ideas for homeschooling through the Advent season with lovely Christmas themed homeschool lessons and resources!

Every year as December approaches, I feel the Advent season beckoning to me. We decorate for Christmas, start our Advent Devotionals, and start planning Christmas School activities. (The planner below is what we use to plan Christmas School!)
Rather than barreling through December with our traditional homeschool lessons, we do what I call Christmas School to usher in the season celebrating our Lord’s birth.
Over the years, our Christmas School has created some lovely, long-lasting memories, and I’d love for you to join us this year in creating your own Christmas School memories!
How to Fit Christmas Homeschooling Into Your Schedule
During our regular school year, we do something called Morning Time with all of the kids together at the dining room table. This year, we will be doing Christmas School in place of Morning Time during the month of December and then I will send the kids off to do their individual school work.
However, you can definitely ONLY do Christmas School in the mornings or do your regular school work in the mornings and then do Christmas School in the afternoons. Or even do Christmas School in the evenings as a family! Be flexible, keep it simple, and keep it calm!
To learn more about how we have done Christmas School in the past, you can listen to this podcast:
Christmas School Curriculum
Listed below are Christmas School options we have done in our homeschool over the years, plus what we are doing this year. While I am sure there are more out there, I didn’t want to share anything I wasn’t familiar with.
I’d also encourage you to take a look at my Free Advent Devotionals for Children post for more ideas!
By the way, these homeschooling options are in no particular order, and I have tried to give you a good summary to help you make your decision. May you be blessed in your home and homeschool this Advent season!
A Connected Christmas – This lovely study from Treehouse Schoolhouse is 3 weeks full of Scripture readings, hymn studies, crafts, poetry, recipes, art studies, and so much more! The lesson plans are well laid out and easy to implement!
Music of Christmas – We do these lessons every other year or so because they are so easy and so fun! You simply read about the song, listen to the music, and celebrate the season with music! The kids love it!

Advent Guide – This guide from Brighter Day Press is unique and easy to implement, and oh so lovely! There are art studies, poetry, hymns, and crafts and recipes along with Scripture that goes through the prophecy of the coming Savior. A beautiful 4 week study!
Character of Christmas – We really enjoyed this study the year we did it because it went through all of the people involved in the Christmas story and was very meaty yet understandable. It is an open and go study which includes everything you need in the plans themselves.
A Gentle Advent (Year 1, Colonial Christmas, and Jesse Tree) – These are fantastic Charlotte Mason inspired advent readings and activities! The lessons span the entire month of December, and include handicrafts, book suggestions, music, art, and other activities. It can seem a bit daunting, but I’d encourage you to only do the things that you have time for and save the other things for next year!

Nature Study Through the Holidays from Our Journey Westward –
This is a totally different take on Advent and we LOVE it! Full of nature study ideas that point to Christ, this has been a family favorite for years!
Peaceful Press (Christmas Guide 1 & 2 and Unearthing Wonder) – These lessons are best for ages 4-8 and include lots of lovely books and simple crafts and ideas. You could use this as something special for your little ones while your older kids are working on their independent school work.
Names of Jesus – The author of this study knows how to make things easy for large family mamas and still produce a deep, yet fun Advent study! The lessons include a study of 25 names of Jesus with coloring pages, hymn studies, activity pages, and more! Very open and go!
Gentle + Classical Christmas – Best for younger ages, but has ideas to extend it for older kids too. There is a lot in this study, so again, I’d encourage you to pick and choose and only do as much as you feel you can handle. But, it really is a lovely study and oozing with celebration of the Advent of our Lord Jesus!
Also, keep an eye out for free Christmas Unit Studies. You can find a lot of these throughout the Advent season on social media.
You might want to try THIS ONE about Saint Nicholas or THIS ONE about Christmas Around the World. Keep your eyes open, and you are sure to find some great Advent unit studies that will make for a lovely Christmas homeschool for those who are on a tight budget!
