A few days ago, I baked my All Whole Wheat Bread. Since it makes 3 loaves, I decided I wanted to quickly get one loaf in the crock pot for bread pudding before the children ate it all up. Bread pudding is one of those foods that warms you heart and soul, but this recipe keeps you from warming up the kitchen!
Crock Pot Bread Pudding
serves 12
1 loaf of bread, cubed (I used my homemade bread)
1/2 cup butter, cubed
1/2 cup raisins (optional)
8 eggs
4 cups milk
1/2 cup sugar (I used Sucanat)
1 tsp. cinnamon
Sauce (optional):
4 Tbsp butter
4 Tbsp flour
2 cups water
1 1/2 cups sugar (or other sweetener)
2 tsp vanilla (learn how to make your own real vanilla!)
Place bread cubes in a greased crock pot. Dot with butter cubes and raisins.
In a bowl, beat eggs and milk and stir in sugar and cinnamon. Pour over bread and stir.
Cover and cook on high for 1 hour. Reduce heat to low and cook for 3-4 hours.
Just before serving, make sauce by melting the butter in a saucepan. Stir in flour until smooth. Gradually add water, sugar, and vanilla. Bring to a boil, cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened. Serve drizzled over warm bread pudding.

Oh, bread pudding! I LOVED my Grandma’s bread pudding but she died several years ago and I have never had anything good like hers again. Nobody learned how to make it…. a tragedy! And the sauce she made to go with it was so good. You take me down taste bud memory lane! Yum! And what a great idea to do it in the crockpot. There’s always such a sense of accomplishment when something is in the crockpot on the kitchen counter! 🙂

Have you ever made this with “day old” biscuits? I have about 20 already cooked “grands” biscuits in my freezer, and I have absolutely no idea what to do with them…but a bread pudding might be perfect.

I have not, but I think that would be perfect!

This sounds like a nice dessert for Sundays-I could leave it cooking while we are gone. Is the sauce that you give instructions for a hard sauce? When I see bread pudding references in my reading there is often mention of a hard sauce-I wondered if it was something with alcohol as an ingredient. I’m not well-versed in the Fine Art of Bread Puddings. :~)
Amy says
Yes, hard sauce would have rum in it. This is just a glaze – of the non-alcoholic variety. 😉

I made this today. My husband says it’s nothing like bread pudding he’s used to in the South, but it still tastes really good. I think it’s more like french toast casserole.

Amy,
Bread pudding is one of my favorite desserts, but amazingly enough, I had never made it before your recipe. I tried this and not only was it super easy, but it was scrumptious!! My husband told me I could make it any time I wanted to.
