Interviews with Homeschooled Adults – Stacey

Name and Age
My name is Stacey Jordan and I am 39.

How many years were you homeschooled?
I was homeschooled from 6th grade till I graduated in 1995.

A favorite homeschooling memory.
I remember being in a choir with some other homeschoolers, I loved to sing and this was so much fun for me.

Favorite curriculum.
For my 11th grade year I did A beka video school and loved it! I had an actual school desk that I would sit at in front of the TV while I watched the videos.

Worst homeschooling memory.
Like Laura, I too hated Saxon math! My mom thought it was great and yet I still needed a tutor lol! I feel that Saxon is one of those curriculum’s that you either need to start with in Kindergarten or you just need to be better at math then I was. There was never enough explanations of the work for me and so most of the time I was just totally confused.

Most difficult lesson/subject for you?
Math, hands down

What you chose to do after graduating? Why did you choose to do that?
After I graduated I briefly attended Community College but stopped once I realized that nursing wasn’t for me lol! I later got a B. S from Post University doing that all online while working and raising two kids. I also attended a community college in TX and got my Associates in American Sign Language Interpreting, something I had been wanting to do since I was 13. I worked as an interpreter in a local HS for one year before we moved to NC in 2014 (where I am from).

Will you homeschool your own children if you have any?
I currently homeschool my two girls, ages 14 and 12. It is something that I had always wanted to do and I have enjoyed it; homeschooling has changed so much since I was a kid and there are so many wonderful options and resources but it is hard! I love following all the different homeschool bloggers and Facebook groups and being part of my local homeschool community .

Any regrets directly related to being homeschooled?
I have no regrets at all and really did enjoy my time being homeschooled

Anything you wish you had been taught?
I can’t think of anything.

How did homeschooling prepare you for what you are doing now (college or work)?
Homeschooling prepared me for work and college by teaching me how to be responsible for my own learning. I found online college to be easy because of the fact that I was homeschooled; it was an environment that I was familiar and comfortable in.  I remember this one job that I started training for; I had to watch all these safety videos. The HR lady set me up in a room with the videos, told me what to do then said, ” You were homeschooled, I know you can do this on your own.”   I think the natural discipline you learn as a homeschooler has really helped with being able to work from home; I set my own schedule and I am responsible for meeting that schedule. There isn’t a boss in the home with me telling me it is time to go to work!

What is the worst misnomer about homeschoolers?
That we aren’t socialized enough. I was not only active in my homeschool community as a kid but I was also very active in my church. My girls are busy with church activities, dance, riding lessons and anything else that comes up that they want to be involved in.
