Let’s be honest, sweet potatoes and marshmallows do not belong in the same dish together. I know for years you’ve been told they make the perfect Thanksgiving side dish, but whoever started that rumor was wrong.
Let me introduce you to the way WE make Thanksgiving Sweet Potatoes. A little butter, a little vanilla, a little brown sugar, and a smattering of pecans (or not) and you have a recipe for success! Goodbye marshmallows – Hello empty dish!
{yeah, you’re gonna want to double this!}
Thanksgiving Sweet Potato Casserole
Ingredients
Bottom Layer
- 4 cups mashed sweet potatoes
- ½ cup butter
- ¾ cup sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla
Top Layer
- 1 cup brown sugar
- ½ cup butter
- ½ cup flour
- ½ cup chopped pecans (optional)
Instructions
Bottom Layer
- Option 1: If you have mashed the sweet potatoes ahead of time, pull them out of the refrigerator and put them in a medium sized bowl. In a medium saucepan, melt butter and sugar together for bottom layer. Then, ad butter and sugar and vanilla to the mashed sweet potatoes and mix well.
- Option 2: If you are making the sweet potatoes on the same day as you are baking the casserole, simply add the butter and sugar and vanilla in as you mash the sweet potatoes in a medium sized bowl.
- Spread bottom layer into a greased 9×13? pan.
Top Layer
- In a medium saucepan, melt butter with the brown sugar and flour. Cook until thick (happens quickly, so be aware!).
- Spread top layer gently over the bottom layer and add chopped pecans if desired.
- Bake at 425° for 25 minutes until top layer forms a nice crust.
Notes
This dish freezes well, so feel free to make it up ahead of time and pull it out in time to reheat for the festivities!

We also put coconut and crushed pineapple in ours. Plus eggs and milk. We love this kind of topping on it.

Yes! I much prefer a streusel topping on my sweet potato casserole!

I agree. Marshmallows are for roasting, although I’m not such a big fan of that either. 😉 This however looks amazing?

Yes! Marshmallows are only for smores. I’ve been looking for a new sweet potato recipe. Think I’ll be trying this one. Thanks!

I love this recipe! The one I use is very similar to it, and you are right, the dish gets emptied every time! I love your blog and so appreciate the link-up every week. I always leave here encouraged. May God bless you for your faithfulness to Him! Love, Cheryl

We call this “Sweet potato yum-yum casserole” for very obvious reasons. Love it!

I just made this and put in the freezer for Thanksgiving. However, I didn’t put any sugar in the topping, only the flour, butter and nuts. We’re trying to cut back on sugar, and there’s already quite a bit of sugar in the potato layer. I’m hoping it’s still yummy.
