I have been picking sandhill plums and making jelly from them all my life; however, this is the first year I have noticed them blooming! Perhaps I am taking more time to enjoy God’s creation these days or perhaps I was just at the right place at the right time with my eyes wide open, but whatever the case may be, I got to see these wonderful blooming thickets. And you know what blooms mean…
FRUIT!
Yay! It’s been 2 years now since the sandhill plums have given a decent bounty due to late freezes. I am so excited about the prospect of lots and lots of jelly from fruit that grows wild in the pastures here I can hardly stand myself!
One more thing…
While I was admiring the sandhill plums, I ran across another wild flowering bush I don’t recognize. Anyone know what this is?
Have a beautiful, Spring-filled weekend!

Looks like forythia to me. So lovely!
kristin says
I meant forsythia
Amy says
Really? Does forsythia just grow wild like that in the middle of nowhere? I guess I didn’t expect it to be since it was just there in in a field!
kristin says
I have seen quite a bit of it growing randomly in the woods here in VA. Good luck transplanting!

Amy,
Looks like forsythia to me (I may have spelled it wrong). I love the yellow blooms so much we bought 4!

I adore forsythia, but I just didn’t expect that to be it. Maybe I’ve never looked at forsythia up close!
Deb says
Well, as someone who knows very little about nature and goes to great lenghts to avoid it frankly, I am going to guess….forsythia?
Amy says
I think the consensus is forsythia!
Lolli says
is it not forsythia?

Amy says
You know, I was just sure it had to be something else, but everyone is saying that, so now I’m going to have to go back out there, dig it up and transplant in my yard (they transplant quite well!) Just can’t believe I didn’t realize what it was!

How fun!!! And pretty 🙂 You know what “bloom” means for me? Allergies :/ (LOL) Of course, it’s probably not from sandhill plums! 😉

That looks like a forsythia.

Yep! That’s what I’m hearing! I figured it couldn’t be since it was out there in the middle of nowhere!
Tonya says
When we lived in Maryland, we saw quite a bit of forsythia growing wild. Funny, we’re in Colorado now and my sister has forsythia growing at her house! She cut branches off earlier this spring and forced them in the house – beautiful!!!

How do you make your replies automatically be sent to the person who commented? R u on WordPress, and, if so, is that why?
Be blessed!

Amy says
Yes, it’s a WordPress thing and one of the main reasons I switched! I love it!
Dixie Osborn says
This looks like a gooseberry bush to me. They grow wild in Kansas just like sandhill plum bushes. The berries are used in jams, jellies and pies
Amy says
Dixie,
Thanks! My mom came by today and said it was not forsythia. When I said you said it was gooseberry, she agreed. Wonderful! I’ve never done anything with gooseberry! How exciting!
Thanks again!
Pam Wilson says
The mystery bush is a Current bush and this is a very tasty jelly fruit also. you would need lots of them they are only about the size of blueberries or smaller. hope this helps you idenify the bush.
PAT says
I’m in need, to find a Wild Sandhill Plum Pie recipe!!! Does anyone have that recipe??? Please e-mail me….Thanks PAT
Amy says
Oh wow! I’ve never heard of that and I grew up with sandhill plums all around. I’ll be doing another post on the plums here pretty soon and I’ll put a shout out about the recipe.
Jim Goldsberry says
The bush is ,without doubt, as Pam already told you, a Current bush. Takes a lot of picking to make Current jelly and it tastes a lot like grape jelly. I am interested in any different Sand Hill Jelly recipes if you have a good one.
Amy says
Thank you! I’ll have a sandhill plum jelly post up next week, I hope.
Ron says
It is not a forsythia. It is a yellow passion flower.
Ron says
It is not a gooseberry either. The gooseberry leaf is more jagged than the leaf in the picture. I googled yellow flowered bushes and found it to be a passion flower. The leaf is more smooth than the gooseberry leaf.
Ron says
The leaf pattern says otherwise than the current bush as well. Look at the leaf pattern. It is very smooth at the edges. All three guesses are incorrect. The leaf pattern on all three are too jagged for them to be anything but a passion flower.
