Hello 3rd Trimester!
Yesterday, we met our Taco Friends for lunch and fellowship. (They are called our “Taco Friends” because when we get together every few months, we always meet at a cheap taco joint. My kids have always nicknamed our various friends to help keep them sorted out in their minds – so these are our Taco Friends.)
I always enjoy fellowshipping with these two families so much, and yesterday was no different. It’s especially nice to get together with them because they understand the pain of losing a child, and what that means for subsequent pregnancies and babies. Our conversation can be candid, yet encouraging.
They are also super good at making a very pregnant mama feel not so huge. 😉
(Excuse the shadow behind me – this was late last night after we got back from church.)
Most of the time, I hear a lot of shock in people’s voices when they find out I still have nearly 3 months to go. Our Taco Friends are more like, “You look so good!” If only more people were that encouraging to pregnant mamas!
I am still feeling really good (except for that night I had caffeine before bed – what was I thinking??!!). I am trying to take more breaks, and take full-blown naps as needed.
This week marks the OB appointment where I take my 1 hour glucose test. yippee. I am actually pretty nervous because I flunked the 1 hr for the first time with my last baby. I still passed the 3 hour with flying colors, but I don’t really want to have to do a 3 hour to prove I don’t have gestational diabetes. The 1 hour is bad enough. So, if you think of it, say a little prayer for me on Wednesday. I’ll let you know the results next update.

You do not look super huge! You look great! With my last baby I had pregnancy edema in my belly… THAT was super huge!

You look absolutely beautiful! 🙂 It’s been wonderful to watch this pregnancy progress.

I love reading your posts. I wanted to share with you how I survived my glucose tests with my twins. My doctor allowed me to freeze it! I took the bottle home from her office, froze it in the tiny ice cube sized trays, and ate it. It was so much easier! On another note, I received a wonderful Christmas present for my DSLR camera last year. It is called a lightscoop (simple box with mirrored side). It fits over the pop up flash and bounces the light off of the ceiling, thus giving more even indirect light to photos. No more red eye, no more shadows, etc.

If it had been my daughter taking the photo, she would have done a much better job. This was taken with an iPhone! lol She doesn’t have a lightscoop, though – I’ll have to tell her about that!

And we had fun, too 🙂
BTW, one of your Taco Friends failed her glucose test wit #5, but passed subsequent tests with flying colors. I think we determined it was what she had for lunch just before she went that probably caused it!
Amy says
I am really thinking over what to eat tomorrow since the test isn’t until 3:30 pm. 🙂

Amy, you look super 🙂
(my lst pregnancy it was mentioned a few times if perhaps I was having twins??!!- that was not super encouraging 😛 )
Anyway- I’ll be honest- I flat out (but very politely) refused to do the glucose test the last 3 babies. I just couldn’t do it again!
And nothing seemed out of the ordinary regarding weight gain or anything so I didn’t see any reason to take a test for something I was pretty sure I didn’t have.
I don’t tend to make waves or be difficult, but I politely said I couldn’t… and after some discussion my doctor offered an “on the spot” glucose blood test. the nurse simply took my blood and off I went! It was the best solution for the last 3 times. so easy. I don’t mind needles so it was an easy compromise for both of us!
**and on a more humorous note- one of those times the nurse hadn’t taken blood in 10 years- it took her about 5 tries- and I have an EASY vein to get, so it was rather an ordeal- but I sat patiently knowing it would get me out of the one hour test! although I was definitely bruised!
Amy says
That’s an idea – may talk to my OB about that. I have had very large babies, but they even tried doing the test way late in pregnancy to see if the size was due to GD. Nope. I just have big babies. I tried to tell them that my grandmother had twins 6 weeks early and they were 6# a piece and she’s a teeny-tiny woman. Plus, I married a guy who is 6’4″. I don’t stand a chance of having little babies. lol

You look really good! I was there a few weeks ago. I will be 32wks tomorrow. But I hear ya about the glucose test. I wasn’t too thrilled about it either!
Bonnie says
Hey, we match!
Sometimes, I can’t believe that I could still get bigger than this!
You look great… you look BLESSED!
Amy says
It is about this point in pregnancy where I ALWAYS think that – there is NO WAY I could get bigger. And then I do! lol

You look amazing! I LOVE this blog. It has completely changed how I view having children, helped to renew my faith in God, and cherish what I have. I feel like finding this blog was something that was supposed to happen. I cannot thank you enough and look forward to reading each time that you post an update!
Amy says
Awww, thank you, Jill! Welcome!

You know what ? Where I live (in France) they have quit doing the glucose test (O’sullivan). I had it for my first 3 babies, for my 4th the midwife suggested I do the “overnight test” (blood test in the morning before having eaten anything). Since then, the O’sullivan test seems to have been abandonned. Only if the overnight test doesn’t come up with encouraging results, do you have to do the 2 or 3 hour test.
No more drinking of that glucose potion ! Because I was gaining weight fast, I’ve done the overnight test twice this pregnancy (at 4 months and at 6 months) and have been fine (I try to be careful and not eat too many sweets the day before !!).
May says
As far as I know, in the UK we do an overnight fast, blood is taken, then a glucose drink is given and more blood taken. I don’t know if that’s the same as the O’Sullivan test? Anyway it’s only offered to women who have risk factors for gestational diabetes, like family history, a raised BMI or being from a high-incidence ethnic group, but in my hospital that’s essentially almost the entire population anyway. I feel it isn’t made sufficiently clear that the test is OPTIONAL, although sometimes recommended. Anyway I hope you don’t have to take the extra one!
Amy says
I don’t think it is optional here. But, I’m determined to ask tomorrow for future reference.
Amy says
Oh, I hope that catches on here!

You look great! Will be praying for you – I hate the GTT. I did have Gestational Diabetes with my last 2 pregnancies – although only diet controlled. I was overweight before I fell pregnant. I only gained 6kg (13lb) and 4kg (9lb) in those pregnancies, and had small-average sized babies (7lb and 6lb) as a result. However, they both had low blood sugar when born 🙁
In Australia we have a 2 hour test after an overnight fast and the glucose drink (yuk!) As it turns out if I only had the 1 hour test it wouldn’t have been detected. Both times I passed the initial test and 1 hour test with flying colors and flunked the 2 hour test – as my sugars didn’t reduce quick enough. Also every time they did a ‘surprise’ blood test for blood sugars I passed them also (several throughout the pregnancies). Some doctors said I must not have it – but I stuck to the diet and pricked my finger 6 times a day from 8 weeks onwards with baby number 4, and 18 weeks onwards with baby number 5 – yikes!
Amy says
Wow! “Surprise” tests – now that’s something! Here we do the 1 hr first and only if you flunk that do you go on to a 3 hr test. I had never flunked it until last time. Bah!

I’m 24 weeks this week and look ginormous!!! Lol. You look great! People can’t believe I have FOUR months left! Lol. Reading you posts seem to be helping my pregnancy not seem like it is dragging as much!! 🙂
Amy says
Posting pregnancy updates helps ME too! 🙂 I get to Monday or Tuesday when I post and always think, “Wow! Already?!”

You are so beautiful!! Congratulations and thanks for keeping us updated. I love following along with your journey!
