This week, I began to feel the 3rd Trimester.
I took a walk and wondered if I would make it back. I woke up at 3:30 am wide awake and uncomfortable. I went shopping and was very thankful for the shopping cart to help hold me up.
Oh, and that 1 hour glucose test?
Failed it.
Your body has to make 3x the insulin in pregnancy than it does outside of pregnancy. I’ve noticed that any little bit of sugar I ingest is really hard on me. My body just couldn’t do it in an hour. I’ll take the 3 hour later this week. No matter what, I will be watching my sugars closely. I just can’t handle them, and don’t like how they make me feel. You’ll probably see me pinning a lot of Trim Healthy Mama recipes on Pinterest. 😉
A couple of weeks ago, I had a friend ask me if anyone was planning a shower for me. I sort of snickered and said, “Um, no…not when you’ve had this many babies!” In our culture, Baby Showers are for first time moms and a baby of the opposite gender of what you’ve already had. That’s it. Anything beyond that is overkill and potential greed. (I say that with my tongue firmly planted in my cheek.)
However, new babies should be cause for celebration – no matter what number they are! And a pregnant mama deserves some pampering, especially if she’s had more than a couple of children.
Guess what?! I’ve found a super fun Baby and Pregnant Mama Celebration that would be a great fit no matter how many babies you’ve had!

In my church growing up and even fairly recently in my current church, the generally rule was that the church ladies gave a baby shower for your first and your 9th (not a typo – yes, I said ninth) child. I guess the logic was that by baby #9, all your essentials (crib, high chair, etc) were fairly worn out and you could use new. I think this was common, but has been lost because so few families get to #9.

My stuff was well worn out before #9! lol

With our next one (number 5) we want to have a book shower. Everyone brings a book for baby and writes a special note inside why it was special to them and why they chose that book for our child. I think it will be fun! Celebrates baby and the whole family. Lots of memories to be made with stories 🙂

I had to do the 3 hour glucose my last two pregnancies. I passed the second to last, but almost passed out doing it. A friend who is a doula encouraged me to try to slowly walk around the hospital to help the sugar process/metabolize. I will say, have someone with you to help you out the whole test time. Walking helped, but I did get lightheaded once and had to sit on the floor with my head between my legs. Sad to say, but the last test I failed because I puked it up after an hour. That pregnancy I was insulin dependent by the last 5 weeks. I did not redue the test, I just started testing and recording my blood sugars. If I had to do it again, I would not have taken the three hour, I just would have started testing and recording my sugars. That is an accurate picture of what is going on in your body anyway. They also put me on a diabetic diet, which is essentially THM. I ended up not gaining barely any weight at the end, which was fine with me.

So does that mean you’re having a baby shower?=) May I ask how many baby showers you’ve been blessed with? I “only” have 4 children and I’ve had 2 baby showers. Oddly enough when I went from boy to girl no one offered me one and we really needed it. I had to go buy all her clothes at the goodwill before she was born. Oh well. It does always make me sad though when I’m pregnant and it’s like a given that there will be no shower because, well, in everyone’s eyes why would there be?

Hi Amy!
Congratulations on your new baby!
I wanted to comment on the glucose test…I’m not from US so the way the test are done may vary. I had to do the test because my urine sample showed extra sugars, so it’s good they take care of you! I was told not to walk during the test because it will affect the results.
Remember that not only pure sugars spike the glucose levels…White flour and many more foods will raise the blood sugar. I had to be very very careful with what I ate especially in the morning, no white bread or anything else with white flour, nothing sweet. I ate rye bread with cucumbers, tomatoes and cheese. I didn’t have to take extra insulin, but I was monitoring my blood sugar levels with the little blood drop machine that I got from the well baby clinic (don’t know the proper name in English 🙂 It helped me know what kind of foods to eat that would keep my blood sugar levels within limits.
And, btw, baby shower is very American thing. In many countries parents receive presents after the baby is born! That’s nice too.
