Yesterday, when I mentioned I didn’t like beenie weenies and later told someone I didn’t really like ketchup, I realized it might be kind of humorous to all of you to hear a bit more about my food dislikes. Just keeping it real here. Kind of like this photo…
Why don’t I like beenie weenies? Well, it’s because I don’t like beans. At all. Even green beans. Only in the last year have I learned to eat chili and that’s only because I load it with corn chips to kill the mushiness of the beans. Yes, beans are mushy and mushiness drives me nuts. It’s that whole sensory processing thing.
So, on the mushiness thread, I don’t like:
mushrooms, jello, mashed potatoes (although I will eat a small amount of REAL mashed potatoes, but hold the gravy, please!), cheesecake, and grits.
I have also NEVER eaten a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
*GASP*
It doesn’t even sound good. Why in the world would you put that combination together? One or the other on bread. Not both!
I also don’t eat Oreos or chocolate cake. They just don’t taste right to me. (How in the world did I end up 50 pounds overweight?!)
And remember, I said I don’t really like ketchup? Well, I’ll eat it on a hamburger, but I have never, ever dipped my fries in it. Fries get salt. That is all.
And horror of horrors…I don’t like pumpkin pie. In fact, as a kid Thanksgiving was a dreaded meal for me. I didn’t like turkey or mashed potatoes or pumpkin pie. I would spend the whole day eating rolls. (Aha, that might be how I ended up 50 pounds overweight!)
Now, before you think you could never invite me over for dinner because I’m soooo picky, let me just say I don’t make a big deal about it. Few people actually know I don’t like certain things because I just deal with it. In fact, the reason I now eat chili is because I was in another person’s home and I was offered a meal before I headed back to my own house. I gladly accepted and sat down to chili with their family. They ate it with corn chips, cheese, and sour cream, so I tried it and realized with the crunch and the added flavors I could handle it. Even if I hadn’t liked it, I would have politely taken the food and eaten around the beans. Dislikes are never an excuse for rudeness. 😉
So, now you know a little something about me and foods I don’t like. What foods are on your list?
JULIE says
Haha Amy..you just named Many! of my favorite foods in your “dislike” list….. except you left out bananas..heehee Do you dislike those? Many do, b/c of the “mushiness!” Those are about my favorite food. Funny! Most of my favorite foods have to do with the “softness”…I like that as opposed to crunchy.
Okay…so…here is my dislike list:
Bacon gasp!! Sorry The smell might be worse than the taste..
Onions (I can handle them cooked if they are chopped small but cold and raw? Don’t even think of going there!)
Ham
Shrimp and all Seafood (although, I am allergic)
Beets
Popcorn (It’s dry, flavorless, and sticks in your teeth)
Black Walnuts
Sweet Pickles
Saurkraut
Watermelon (or any melon, although I’m allergic to them anyway)
Black Eyed Peas
Peanut Brittle
Fudge
Gooseberries
Liver
Ribs …or any meat on the bone!
Jalapenos …or any hot and spicy pepper
Caramel
Frosting
okay….that is about the most offensive foods that come to my mind 🙂
But, just so you know, I don’t make a big deal about it either, so most people don’t know how eccentric I am. Also, I never have thought of myself as picky because I LOVE a host of HEALTHY foods that most people gross out about. (Hummus, Yogurt, Avocados, and……….guess what?? BEANS!)
Be Blessed!!
Julie from MO
Amy says
Oh wow! We could be Jack Sprat & his wife! lol
Charlotte Moore says
Hahahaha!!! I don’t care for ketchup either. I actually eat my burger with just let., tom., and onion. I feel the same about peanut butter and jelly. YUCK!!!!! I like both but not at the same time. I do not eat mushrooms of any form or fashion. I do like beans in my chili, baked beans, green beans, and peas.
I do not like cream cheese, sour cream, or condensed sweetened milk. I do not like butter on my bread or my baked potato. I eat them plain. So why am I 20 lbs. heavier than I want to be? Ha!! )-:
Amy says
I used to really not like sour cream either, but it’s grown on me…so has butter. My husband’s family are big condiment eaters, so I’ve learned some of their behaviors! lol
Valerie says
Bananas, meatloaf or canned peas…gag!!
Amy says
Canned peas…couldn’t agree more!
Kyle says
I actually like all of those things that you mentioned. I love most foods, but there are a few that I keep trying and still don’t like them. Cantaloupe and celery are my two big dislikes. 😀
Amy says
I don’t like cantaloupe either!
Kacie says
Lol! I don’t really like yogurt. The texture, the flavor. Ick.
Kristita says
I am with you on the anti-yogurt train — although ainadore Tzaziki Sauce. Go figure. Maybe Greek yogurt is different?
Kristine says
Finally I have found someone who doesn’t like Peanut Butter and Jelly, Cheesecake, and Pumpkin Pie!!! I will make all of these things for my family because they are THEIR favorites. I have had one bite of a peanut butter and jelly one time when I was five years old because my dad made me try it. I immediately gagged and let’s just say my dad had a mess to clean up and never forced me to try it again.:). I will eat an open faced peanut butter sandwich. I don’t think of myself as a picky eater but it is definitely a texture thing!!!!
Amy says
We could have Thanksgiving together. 😉
Liz says
I was trying so hard to think of foods that I truly don’t like…and I couldn’t find one. I mean, there are foods I don’t care for in large amounts, and foods I preferred not to eat as a kid but I like now (though not very many), but mostly I just deal with allergies and sensitivities. BUT….when someone mentioned canned peas….I had to agree! Canned peas are GROSS in my book. That and those slimy canned or fresh oysters, depending on how they are prepared. I don’t like the smoky, really super fishy tasting ones. And I don’t like to eat whole clams with all the guts. But otherwise I loved all seafood before all my allergies. I love foods…I love baking and cooking and planting and harvesting…I love the look of foods…and my kids are always teasing me and moaning and groaning when I am taking pictures of food. They think it is silly. But the colors are so beautiful! Plus, I just love the way God provides all the nourishment we need…right there in all those things that come from the earth He created! 🙂
Amy says
Yep, not a fan of canned peas at all. My daughter likes to take photos of food too! God did create some beautiful food!
Jillian says
I’ve wondered how I’ve gained weight too, since I’m so picky! Of course, I already know the answer. 😉 I don’t like PB&Js either. I ONLY eat them if I make them because I make them a special way. I put a dab of jelly and mix it into the peanut butter until it is well blended and turns a pinkish color. It can’t have any visible specks of jelly. If it does, that means I need to keep blending. 🙂 I never eat the crust on bread. Like, never. And I don’t make the kids eat it either, I always cut it off. They think I’m cool like that. 🙂 Ketchup? I don’t like that either. The smell of it makes me gag. This was a cute post Amy. 😉
Amy says
HA! I’m going to make you eat the crusts. 😉
Kinga says
It is my first time commenting here, even though I follow your blog for a couple of your adorable babies:); but I am laughing here, because I can’t agree more on the peanut/jelly sandwich! it is really an awful combination. My children don’t eat that either:)
Amy says
Phew! I am sooo glad to find others who don’t like that weird combination!
Ralene says
I’m with you on the beans. However, I am SEVERELY allergic to beans, all kinds of beans, anything with the word beans in it. It’s awful. I can’t even drink coffee.
But I’m aghast about the cheesecake. Best. Dessert. Ever. IMHO. lol…
Amy says
That’s my husband’s take on cheesecake as well. 😉
SaraA says
Hi, Ralene! So fun to see you on here! 🙂 Sorry to hear about the bean allergy.
Sara Anderson (Grace & Growing)
Leah says
I’ll invite you over! Except for PB&J, this is just about my list. Oh, and beans don’t bother me. If you want to share chili with me, I’ll eat the beans and you can have the rest. Even the thought of cheesecake…yuck! Add to this all meat/fish/seafood, processed cheese, anything in a can…I’ll eat those things, but never on my own. I swallow down a token amount of meat (I don’t think I have ever consumed an entire 3-4 oz. serving in one sitting) so my kids can see it. Also, eggs. I force myself to eat them…I keep chickens after all and they are sooooo good for you. If I eat them with hash browns (not the kind like at fast food places, the shredded kind) and melted cheddar, they are fine. For me, all of the above is pretty much a texture thing. With meat, I literally cannot control the gag. I break it up into small pieces and pretend it’s a pill. Ketchup from the store tastes like dish soap to me so we make our own and it is pretty good. I have seriously considered going to counseling over the matter 😉 Seriously. But every time I think about it, I realize I don’t want to go hear some psychobabble about how I need to get in touch with this or that. I just want a step-by-step, desensitization plan.
amanda says
I didn’t used to like chili or anything with beans either. That is until i started using dried beans i had to soak myself. What i found was that if i do not cook the beans as long…they still retain texture. No more canned beans for us! They are not crunchy but they don’t just mush in your mouth. I can actually feel the bean with the tomato etc. you might consider trying that…keep the corn chips handy…just in case. 🙂
Amy says
Definitely worth a try!
Sarah says
This is too funny! I read this out loud to my husband and he thought I had written it about me! It sounds just like me. To make it worse, I don’t even like my foods to touch!
Amy says
Amen to that!
Leah says
There are very few foods I don’t like, but many foods that don’t like me:)
Gluten, dairy, beef, yeast, and fats all make me very ill. Ever since I got my gallbladder out a few years ago, even small amounts of fats with the exception of Earth Balance will trigger flu-like symptoms that completely undo me for a whole day. I have no idea why, but we don’t have insurance.
Now about the part where you said, “How in the world did I end up 50 pounds overweight?!”
Well, even with all those dietary restrictions, I have 50 pounds to lose, but you would think I would be a stick!
I guess we find ways, don’t we?!:D
Amy says
Sadly, we do. 🙁
sarah says
My husband cannot stand mushy food either. No sandwhiches for him. What I do sometimes is toast the bread then make the meat sandwhiches. That helps protect the bread. He also found mixing somethibg crunchy helps it get down. 🙂 so mashed p’s have meat and corn mixed in… many things have chopped tomatos and black olives to help. Just thought Id share. 🙂
Amy says
I used to put chips in my sandwiches to make them crunch! lol
Amy says
My grandma’s tuna salad just isn’t a sandwich without the chips. Ditto for sloppy joes. 😉
KnowhutImean says
I’m not picky, y’all. I eat it all….just about. Except eggs erroneous. Do you know what the secret ingredient to eggs erroneous is? 😉 ha ha ha…….
Danell Pribis says
Sushi – uh uh! I happened to know I don’t like octopus or hot spicy foods.
Amy says
My boys like octopus! ICK!
Sarah says
My list? Mushrooms, meat, eggs, stator tots, seafood , Mt. Dew (not technically a food) ,icing, rocky road ice cream, and canned Lima beans. Used to be many more but I console myself with the fact that I have loved fruits and veggies as long as I can remember and often steam mixed veggies for breakfast :-).
Amy says
Not a fan of seafood either. But, I have also always been a fruits and veggies person. 🙂
Claudia says
Oh. My. Word. That is tooo funny!!!
My family would live off of PB&J if I let them. 😉
Amy says
I think my kids would too, but they better not dare mix the jelly knife with the peanut butter knife! lol
Kara says
I’m so glad I’m not the only one who dislikes pumpkin pie. EVERYONE I know just loves it. I like pumpkin in other things, but it does not belong in a pie. Ever.
Amy says
Yes, ma’am!
michelle says
I’m the odd ball here. Live cheesecake..pbj..beans..well..pretty much everything. One of my strongest pregnancy cravings is actually liver and onions..lol..mmm and watermelon…but wait this is about what we don’t like…hotdogs, bisquits and gravy, grits, sausages, blue cheese ( live Headcheese…lol) Mac n cheese, naveybean soup, and while I may eat chocolate cake (no fave by any means) I don’t understand red velvet cake and hate what I’ll effect it has on my digestive system..lol
Amy says
I used to eat liver and onions as a kid, then I had to make it myself and about croaked! lol
Kate @ Modern Alternative Mama says
I like almost anything. But I don’t like bananas. Or mayonnaise. I can only take sour cream mixed into something (I don’t like any cultured dairy products at all, unless they are in something. But I do like yogurt in smoothies or clabbered milk in bread). It means I don’t care for almost any dip since they’re based on one of those last two things. But pretty much anything else…I’m not so picky!
Amy says
I am not a big dip person for much the same reason. I do like my Greek yogurt, but it has other things mixed in it.
Amber says
I get finicky about fruits. The only two fruits I eat are apples and bananas. Pretty much all berries gross me out…they are either too seedy, or too slimy (GRAPES!). And I’m picky about which apples I eat…they have to be cold, and sweetly flavored. If the apple isn’t refrigerated, it tastes too mushy. Oh, I do like watermelon. if it isn’t seedless. The seedless kind seem mushy to me also. And, again, I only like it cold. I tried blueberries for the first time this summer. I thought they tasted like grapes, but weren’t nearly as gross. I love chocolate, but I hate chocolate cake. Both of my kids HATE ketchup, which cracks me up, cause I’m always like, what kids hate ketchup!?!? lol. But now I can let them know I have found a kindred anti-ketchup spirit!
Amy says
I don’t like apples because they are mushy…now you have me wondering if I put them in the refrigerator I might actually like them!
Chrissy says
Apples should always be refrigerated! They will rot your other fruit, though. We have an entire crisper drawer filled with washed apples!
Sara says
I eat everything! Or at least I’d like to… Lactose intolerance as well as a fructose and gluten sensitivity have my body (that is, my gut and not my tastebuds!) hating just about everything but tomatoes, rice, and meat. X-/
Becky Marie says
Its always fun to hear what other people dislike. A few on your list are my favorite things (PB&J any day for me!)
I especially like your comment at the end “dislikes are never an excuse for rudeness.” I often find myself having to decline food because of my boys allergies, and it always makes me feel so rude.
Amy says
With allergies so rampant these days, I think people understand. I know for me, when I need to take a meal to a family with allergies, it helps to know what they CAN have. Sometimes just turning it around makes people realize you aren’t completely food-free. 🙂
Michelle says
The only food I really do not like is tapioca. ..the texture creeps me put because my grandfather used to call it fish eyes that or anything my mother in law makes with the word casserole in it……. I am not sure how she does it but her scalloped potatos. They are some how raw and over cooked mushy and dry and greasy all at the same time in different spots. But I smile put ketchup on it and eat anything she serves me because its made with heart love and our family rule is you eat what is set before you unless it will literally kill you lol . Our kids also follow this rule . When someone makes you food whether you like it or not they should think you enjoyed the meal!
Michelle says
I did think of two others lol cheese from a can…. so wrong nothing should be that color and most “boxed foodss or bagged foods” with meat .. but i dont really consider that food….
Amy says
Meals aren’t really about the food, are they? 🙂
Meg says
I loathe okra, cilantro, olives, oysters, oatmeal and soup (any and all soup!) We’re a house full of adventruous eaters and enjoy a wide variety of foods, but despite repeatedly trying these foods, I still cannot tolerate them.
Amy says
I have a lot of adventurous eaters as well. lol
Brooke says
I don’t like canned veggies…peas, green beans, and corn. I also think skim milk and American cheese are gross. :p Not a fan of raw tomatoes either, but I eat them fairly often on sandwiches, salads, etc. Two of my kids like them plain! Your dislike list sounds delicious to me! Pumpkin pie with whip cream on top. Mmmm!
Amy says
I’ll politely pass my pumpkin pie your way next time it comes around. 😉
Ashley Pichea says
Am I weird because I don’t like certain brands of bottled water? Because I don’t. But I’ll drink it straight from the tap most of the time. [P.S. I’m a picky eater, too, but like you, I’ve learned to eat around things as I’ve gotten older.]
Lynda says
Absolutely not! I’m really picky about that also, Ashley.
Amy says
This is SO me! I swear I can taste the plastic! I actually found out what I’m not liking is the lack of minerals in most bottled waters. The ones I really like (Fuji being one) actually have the minerals in the water like my tap water does and that’s why I like it!
Lynda says
Wow, I never thought there could be anyone pickier than my sister and I. You definitely raise the bar, lol.
Desiree says
I like almost everything. But I really loathe olives, octopus, sushi, canned vegetables, most canned soups, and kumquats. 🙂
Stephanie@Bowmania says
and yet you like asparagus??????? 😉
stephanie says
But it doesn’t necessarily need to be mushy when cooked
Amy says
Yep! You should try it! 😉
stephanie says
Definitely give pbj a try. Although I love strawberry Jam on mine. But while a pbj tastes good it’s not my idea of a great meal either.
As for me. Not a fan of egg plant, hate sweet pickles, BBQ is not my favorite. I’m very picky about sauce. Although I eat it for my husband quite often.
Samantha says
I, too have a list of things I won’t eat or dislike immensely. I don’t think it is quite as long as some of the others, but it might be.
Mushrooms (I try not to eat fungus. I mean seriously mold is a fungus and I certainly wouldn’t purposely eat it, so why eat mushrooms)?
Onions (Yes, I will find them in my spaghetti sauce and moved them to the side, so please do not tell me I can’t taste them. They are a little harder to avoid when eating salsa that doesn’t mean I haven’t tried).
Cooked green peppers (As Amy said the mushiness. Yuck).
There are other’s I am just not going to name them all as these three are the top of my list. You have given me an idea on how to get my daughter to eat chili this winter. Cheese and Tortilla chips. She doesn’t eat condiments.
Amy says
Fungus…exactly the reason I give for not eating mushrooms. 😉
Char Grisham says
What about the fried spam and tuna!!!?????
Amy says
BAHAHAHA!
Holly says
I have read and enjoyed your blog for about two years and have thought if we lived close we would be great friends because of shared interests, values, etc…….I have just picked my jaw up off the floor after reading the foods you don’t like!!!! I feel so confused! We could never be friends now! (teeheeheehee)
Amy says
Oh no! I promise to behave at meals. 😉
Beth@Weavings says
What a fun post!
I thought I was a picky eater until I read your list. I have to agree about ketchup. I eat all my hamburgers and chicken plain. I won’t even eat mayo in or in anything except chicken salad and anything made out of Miracle Whip won’t pass these lips. I also won’t eat peanut butter and jelly, either.
I’ll eat green beans and beans in chili, but baked beans are out. My MIL always makes baked beans and potato salad (no go) to go with grilled hamburgers and since I won’t eat anything but the hamburger everyone thinks I’m eating a high protein diet.
Now cheesecake and pumpkin pie are some of my favorite things!
Stacy @Stacy Makes Cents says
Ha, ha! So, I won’t bring you any Beenie Weenies to 2:1. 😉
Amy says
LOL!
Vicki Arnold says
You lost me at cheesecake.
Amy says
My husband would agree. 😉
Kali says
Ketchup (hate the smell too)
Vinegar
Meat (raised a vegetarian and now I can only eat tiny bites of very well done steak)
Raw onions
Cooked carrots
Plain yogurt
Store bought milk (I barely tolerate raw milk but its wayyyyyy better)
Veggies with sugar added, yuck
Okra
Olives
Amy says
Veggies with sugar added? Say what? That sounds awful!
Sarah Robinson says
Ha, I’ve known you for a long time now and I didn’t realize you didn’t like ketchup. I was sure that I would know about all of the foods on your list when I sat down to read this.
I can vouch for the fact that you do not make a big deal of it. Obviously…if I didn’t even notice the ketchup thing. LOL
Amy says
Ha! Glad to have it verified!
Minni Saxton says
I am a first generation immigrant. That being said, I didn’t eat a lot of American foods until between 8 and 12 years of age. I don’t like peanut butter, or pecans or walnuts. Not particularly fond of cooked cabbage (think St. Patrick’s Day) and absolutely will not drink American milk! Yogurt is much different here an I abhor fake cherry and grape flavored anything. Also, tomato soup is not my favorite thing. That being said, I do eat almost anything else, even beans and anchovies!
Amy says
I grew up with a lot of foods distinct to my heritage, so I understand! I was so disappointed to realize pancakes to most people are these thick, fluffy things. I thought they were crepe-like and so much yummier! 😉
Cheyenne Marie says
I am so not into condiments. I hate too much ketchup, too much mustard, etc. Also a huge no no on my list is miracle whip! So many people love it, but I cannot stand it. It tastes terrible. I like small amounts of condiments within reason but that’s about it.
JULIE says
I wonder if anyone else has ever awoke the morning after Thanksgiving to make a pumpkin pie just to have an entire pie to enjoy because they were too full to enjoy a piece the night before and the thought of waiting another entire year to have that taste of pumpkin, whipped cream and a dash of nutmeg was just too hard to resist? Funny, because I’m not really a big eater, but pumpkin pie is SO my favorite. Even the thought of that beautiful amber/orange color makes me sing praises to Autumn. 🙂 Ahhhhhh
Amy says
You are welcome to have my piece this year. 😉
Amy says
Liver. No way. No how. No can do. Even the phrase – “What am I, chopped liver?”, sends chills down my spine.
Chellie says
I get the mushiness thing. I love the flavor of bananas, but the last time I tried to just eat a banana, I almost vomited (and that would not have been good, I was a preschool teacher and trying to “set a good example”). I have often told my kiddos that there are a lot of foods that are regularly on our menu, but they aren’t there because I like them. I hate most of my families favorite foods, but I swallow them down because the people I love love those foods 🙂
Amy says
Exactly! Meals aren’t really about the food. 😉
Char Grisham says
You forgot to mention Ty and your all time food dislike, TUNA. I still laugh when I think about that story. See you guys later this week.
Steve
Amy says
Yeah, I should have linked that story in the post!
Jamie says
Lol, thank you for this. It made me smile (and my mouth dropped a few times– no PB&J!! Really!?!?!)
Olive Wild says
Wow. No one mentioned hamburgers yet. I have never eaten a hamburger… or a hotdog… or a french fry with ketchup.
Charla says
So great to read about others who dislike the PB & J combo! If you haven’t, try peanut butter mixed with honey on a sandwich!! Super yummy! And if you can manage to not eat said sandwich and put it in the fridge for later, the honey crystalizes. Mmmmm…I think I need to go make myself a sandwich!
Kelly R. says
Haha! And people think I’m nuts! 😉
I don’t like yogurt, condiments (any), pickles, tomatoes (but only if they’re in sauce form), salad dressings (even ranch), sour cream, cream cheese, anything green, and most veggies i like need to be raw. Although recently I made green beans for my family and actually liked them a bit underdone and crunchy. I’m not going to say I like them now, but I can definelty tolerate them now.
And not until I was older did I realize that most of the things I don’t like are made with vinegar. It was only recently did I start liking some bbq sauces.
You’re not alone! 😉
Amy says
I like some beans, namely refried and black . . . sometimes ranch style . . . . but I’m totally with you in loathing green beans. Even the smell makes my face contort in displeasure. LOL.
Amy says
Yep! Do not like to smell them cooking at all!
Judy @ Contented at Home says
Pregnancy has made me a HUGE fan of ketchup! I was just laughing the other day because I almost never dip my fries in ketchup, but now I’m the one in the drive-thru insisting on ketchup. 🙂
I don’t like spinach or that awful dandelion stuff that my husband likes. I don’t like sourkraut (I don’t even know how to spell it!). I refuse to eat hot dogs because of what is in them.
But… I love liver and onions. And split pea soup. And a lot of other things that most people won’t eat. Let’s just call it even, shall we? 😉
Chrissy says
Beets because of the flavor. yes…even the chips. ha! And boiled Brussels sprouts and oysters because they are slimy. I hate the flavor and mouthfeel of all melons. And anything…ANYTHING…artificially sweetened or low fat. They taste like death warmed over. Horrid.
Other than that…I have relished Pakistani fish head soup and goat curry, I have had amazing Vietnamese Shrimp and some very unidentifiable other items on a boat in Ha Long Bay (delicious meal but I truly didn’t know what it was besides the shrimp), oxtail soup, sushi is a favorite…but make me eat a slice of watermelon and I might be sick on you.
Briana says
Amy, you hit the nail on the head. I absolutely detest beans! Everyone in my family loves beans and I have been told a million times how it can really round out a meal or completely cut out the need for a meat in your dish. *gag*. It’s actually funny, I had a similar experience with beans, but I was offered taco soup with Three. Different. Kinds. Of. Beans. I just ate around it. I feel funny not eating something that was offered to me because of my not looking a food.
I have found, however, that if I don’t have to chew it, I am fine. Otherwise, tons of cheese, sour cream, and chips or crackers and keep a big glass of water near by. Oh and saying “this too shall pass” over and over and over again in my head.
Rebecca says
Oh my word, this is the funnies thing I’ve read in a while! I get SO annoyed when my kids are picky about food, I mean one won’t eat tacos. At all. Ever. Which we have (and have had) every single week for all of his fourteen years of life. Drives me nuts to see him eating breakfast cereal while the rest of us eat tacos. But I have my own dislikes:
Beet. Give me a handful of garden soil and I’d eat that because to me it tastes the same.
Ketchup (except with fries – weird, huh?!?)
MAYONNAISE and ANYTHING with Mayo in it. So pretty much every summer salad at every potluck dinner. YUCK. I will not eat it even to be polite. Although I manage to avoid it without being rude by, say, “forgetting” to take any when the dish of ickiness is passed.
Pie in general. I’ll eat it but it’s only meh to me.
Tater-tot casserole or anything that has cream of mushroom soup as a key ingredient. Who does that?!?
Actually, I sort of hate most casseroles. I almost never make them unless they’re egg/breakfast. I will eat them at my grandma’s house, but only because she’s 90 and I love her.
I’m sure I could think of more, but these are a few biggies. The joy of being the mom is that I just don’t cook what I don’t like to eat. Sneaky!
Karla says
This is so funny! I don’t consider myself a picky eater in general, but we all have our preferences. And I definitely agree with it not being an excuse for rudeness.
There are are a lot of things I used to HATE but have come to enjoy – for instance, seafood. I hate when it tastes fishy, but have come to love salmon, shrimp, and swordfish (especially with butter and garlic). I don’t like plain tuna, but will eat it in a tuna melt or some sort of casserole. I ABHOR clams. I have acquired an affinity for cheesecake, but wouldn’t give it a second look if it’s plain. I couldn’t stand store-bought tomatoes, but when I ever tasted a garden-fresh tomato, it was an epiphany (we should be eating fresh food anyway!).
Some food aversions are texture-related – I hate plain bananas (but don’t mind banana bread), plain yogurt, oatmeal (it makes me gag – but I like baked oatmeal), stuffing, and another thumbs down for pumpkin pie. In fact, most pies are “eh” for me, either because the fruit filling is sickly sweet or they’re soggy. I LOVE sweets, and if I’m going to indulge, it might as well be something I like. I’m not crazy about chocolate cake with chocolate frosting or white cake with white frosting, but I love the opposites together. Cakes are, in general, one of my favorite desserts (along with other cookies, brownies, pastries, and ice cream).
I don’t like cantaloupe or honeydew and only like watermelon if it’s light pink. I generally like most veggies (well, that I’ve tried) unless they are canned or over-cooked, but I’ve never really been able to stomach eggplant (I think it’s rubbery) or beets.
Oh – and I used to hate ALL BEANS, too! I still cannot stomach kidney beans or lima beans, but enjoy black beans or small red/pink beans in chili, quesadillas, and other Mexican dishes. I also like hummus and other things made with beans (I’ve made various desserts with pureed beans, which taste very good).
Sometimes I feel like I’m the only person that can’t stand ranch dressing – just the smell does me in.
I could probably go on – it’s fun to think about! – but you get the idea. I read that our tastebuds are constantly regenerating, so don’t completely write something off just because you used to dislike it… and don’t necessarily be surprised if you don’t like something you once did (I can’t eat frosting like I used to as a kid!).
Karla says
PS – I love me a good PB&J! But I prefer whole grain bread, natural peanut butter, and strawberry jam. I cannot stand grape jam, marmalade, and many other varieties.
Linda Ash says
Fish!! I can’t stand fish, or seafood of any kind. Never serve a tuna sandwich to me.

As kids my brother and I didn’t like beans in our chili so our mom would smash them making the chili thick and flavorful. You might try it that way.

Hmmm…olives, doesn’t matter the color, mushrooms, licorice (though I will humor my licorice loving man by sharing a Red Vine on occasion), most brands of Root Beer, banana served any way other than in the peel. Who thought it would be a good idea to pair mushy banana with creamy, divine pudding??? Borders on ungodly if you ask me. Fruit or jello salad of any kind. All those textures happening at once makes my digestive system go into reverse. I have learned to dissect disliked foods and swallow them whole, as well as how to chew without involving my tongue in the process. True talent, I know. Oh, and my in-laws pizza. They put every topping under the sun on in MASSIVE proportions. When your favorite pizza is plain old cheese, this causes serious problems, let me tell you.

I realize this post is old…but I also hate beans! And ketchup! And cheesecake! And pumpkin pie! I made one from scratch once (I even cooked the pumpkin!) and hated it. Everyone else ate it up but I didn’t even finish my piece. I will have to try your chili trick because I feel like I *should* make chili as a filling meal, but I just cannot handle beans at all. I didn’t eat peanut butter for 11 years after 3rd grade. I must have taken one too many sandwiches. I still prefer not to eat it and peanut and jelly is just the worst! Most potatoes (I am improving here…I used to only eat fries, but now I can handle mashed or baked). Artichokes. Peas. Ugh!!
