It’s summer time, so let’s have fun developing character in your kids.
What’s the best way to develop character and still have fun?
Start a Kid Business
When your children have their own business, they develop many character traits. Let me share 5 character traits my son Hunter developed as he ran his own business from the age of 10 to the age of 15.
Work Ethic
We all want our kids to have a strong work ethic and what better way than having their own business. When your kids are responsible to others, they are more likely to complete their job.
Hopefully the business they create is one that interests them. When your kids are having fun and interested in their own business, they will naturally develop a work ethic.
This is true for my own kids. My son Hunter ran his own Marshmallow Gun Business for several years. Each summer he would sell about $1000 worth of marshmallow guns. He liked playing with his own marshmallow guns and he enjoyed making them for others. From the age of 10 to 15, Hunter developed a strong work ethic with his marshmallow gun business.
Persistence
There were times when Hunter’s business had problems. Since Hunter had orders to fill, he could not quit and go play outside. He had to solve those problems to fill his orders.
One example of how Hunter had to be persistent was when he ran out of supplies for the marshmallow guns. The local vendors were out of the same supplies also so Hunter had to be persistent in finding the pieces he needed to fill his orders. He also had to be creative in solving his lack of supply problem.
Diligence
When kids have their own business, they must prioritize their activities.
Do I go play with my friends?
Or, do I finish making my marshmallow guns so I’m ready for this weekend’s booth?
Hunter had to be sure his marshmallow guns were made for shows, booths and online orders. At times, he had to be diligent with his business and forgo time with his friends.
Creativity
Let’s face it, all business owners have problems. It takes creativity to solve some of those problems. This was true of Hunter as well.
Painting his marshmallow guns seemed to always present problems. Hunter & his dad were very creative in trying to solve this problem. They tried several different ways to paint those marshmallow guns. Some worked. Some did not.
Creativity was required to eventually find the best solution to painting the marshmallow guns.
Leadership
Having your own business is the quickest way to become a leader. This is true of adults, as well as kids.
There was a time Hunter needed help painting his marshmallow guns. He showed leadership qualities and hired a young dad to paint the guns. That’s right. He was 14 years old and hired a 30 year old dad to help him in his marshmallow gun business. That’s the fast way to leadership.
Overall, running his own business was one of the best ways Hunter developed godly character!
