We are on Week 3 of Tapestry of Grace Year 2 which covers from the Middle Ages to Colonial America. We are currently studying the Byzantine Empire and the Rise of Islam.
My 14 year old wrote an essay on the Hagia Sophia which contains many beautiful mosaics. I decided in order to help the other children understand what a mosaic is, we’d look up images on the internet and try to create our own mosaics with M&Ms.

Blake’s version of the Hagia Sophia
I bought 2 big bags of M&Ms (probably should have bought more because there was a lot of scrambling for certain colors and a couple of toddlers eating as fast as we could put them on the plate!)
We just used plates with a lip to contain our candies, but you could put down a layer of cookie dough (and bake later) or a layer of frosting to act as cement.
I didn’t have the children make specific designs, so we had everything from a rocket, to a man, to intricate shapes that took up the entire plate.
While you could go to the trouble of breaking up pieces of ceramic and other materials and actually creating more realistic mosaics, this project allows for small children to participate and doubles as an afternoon snack! 😉

How fun and creative!

Edible art….. doesn’t get any better than that! And no glue mess or anything, maybe just a few chocolate fingers. 🙂

That looks like delicious fun!

what a great idea. We did one similar with melty beads (perler beads). They also have bigger beads for smaller hands. Lol, I am pretty sure my kids would rather make mosaics with m&ms though, especially with a cookie dough base. Fun cookie idea too!

I’m seeing the ratio of brown to blue m&ms is low. (one for me one for school)
THANKS for linking up this week!!

Yes, the blues were a favorite. 😉

I”m thinking this could also be great for Roman mosaics. Of course I guess the Byzantine Empire is LATE Roman……….
Tami says
Oooh – thanks for the idea Amy. I have a mosaic project coming up this week – this sounds like a much more enjoyable way to go about! I can just hear it now – “My teacher ate my homework!” 🙂
Amy says
LOL – I had my fair share! 😉

Love, love, love this idea! Definitely want to try putting it on cookie dough! What a fantastic way to show Daddy what they did today! No way am I attempting this with the Dynamic Duo though. You are a brave soul, Amy, a brave, brave soul. World War II would look like child’s play if I turned the Duo loose with that many M&Ms!
