Happy 2nd day of Autumn/Fall to ya! (lol…couldn’t resist!)

I got to thinking about a comment Georgiann left on the PREVIOUS POST about “smelling” versus “feeling” crispness. I am almost positive I “smell” crispness, yet, she is absolutely right that I should probably “feel” it instead…hmmm…..
That’s when I realized I “smell”.
(ha! I had a moment where I thought, “I should just end the post right there and come back in a few days to 0 subscribers and 0 followers!” lol! Reign her back in, Amy!)
Not too long ago, I handed my 3 year old son a pair of fresh unnies for the day and before putting them on, he proceeded to smell them! I about laughed myself silly before realizing he just did EXACTLY what I do whenever I am trying to decide if something is clean or dirty.
Years ago, my oldest daughter came sniffing her way into the kitchen asking, “Who just opened a can of soda?” I was shocked until I realized it is not uncommon for me to sniff my way through the house (especially when pregnant!) trying to find something I am smelling, be it good or bad.
In fact, most of my memories have smells attached to them.
Everything from a certain lotion that reminds me of morning sickness to the hot tar and concession food smells that remind me of the State Fair to the smell of cool, crisp Friday night football games that bring me back to my high school years…EVERYTHING has a smell associated with it.
Even though some smells bring back painful or just icky memories (I have actually gotten up and moved away from a place where I could smell that morning sickness…I mean that lotion I’m not particularly fond of), I kind of like the fact that my life is smelly!
So, Georgiann, you are right…I don’t actually “smell” crispness, but what I do smell reminds me of the “feel” of crispness. It really is a beautiful thing how our senses work together to create an entire mental picture and invoke such strong emotions!

Hi Amy!
I just sent you a few emails but wanted to comment here too!
You are so right about smells that invoke feelings….I don’t think there is any escape form it?
I too smell the Fall crispness in the air along with feel it! Its a whole package!
Warmly,
Georgiann

No crispness here! Just very, very hot!
I am looking forward to whn it gets cooler! It feels like fall here on the last day of October; the wind picks up and it cools off that day, every year. I’m looking forward to it!

Mmm It’s nice to meet another “smeller!” 😉 I have so many memories that are hung on smells! I always tell people my favorite part of Christmas is the smells. My favorite part of a bookstore is the smell of books! And I can smell the crispness in the air, that hint of something chilly that makes you think of snow… Well, I can smell it when it’s here but right now? Now we’re still roasting alive where I’m at. Yeah, no crispness yet this year. It usually gets “crisp” around the end of September though so it won’t be long. 🙂
I found your lovely blog on Kimberly’s (from Raising Olives) suggestion on BlogFrog in my quest for babywearing info. And well, I like your blog so now you’re stuck with me. 😉 I’ll be dropping by to say hello occasionally. Like whenever there’s a new post I have something to reply about. Which is usually. Because I am talkative like that. Or typative. Something like that. Yeah it’s getting early and I get less cohesive coherant co something … I make less sense in the wee hours of the morning so I’m just gonna quit while I’m ahead. Have a great rest of your week! 🙂

Wow! That’s so opposite to me. I have had chronic sinus for my whole adult life (about 15 years). I decided to give up dairy once to see if it made a difference, which it did, but ew – all the smells, it was overwhelming! I buckled and went back onto dairy, but recently relised I need to give it up again. I have pictures with my memories, definately NOT smells! lol
Love your blog. I’ve subscribed to RSS feeds.
