Large families and dining room tables…
They sort of just go together.
Reading about my friend Sarah building her own large family table made me realize my own precious table needed some TLC.
Every year while on vacation in Colorado, our family stops at this little out of the way shop and I purchase my year’s supply of beeswax-based furniture wax for our dining room table. It is a tradition that has become near and dear to us and I thought I would share how I do it and the beauty it creates in our home.
This is the wax. Farmhouse Furniture Wax by Sweet Grass Farm (I use the lavender). I love this stuff. I wish I could win a lifetime supply of this stuff. I don’t think I could ever own enough of it!
I give our thirsty table a drink by dipping out the wax with a soft cloth and wiping the table slowly and lovingly.
After a few moments, my children come in behind me with rags of their own to buff the table and connect their work with the benefit of a beautiful family table.
I took out all the leaves and scrubbed away the food and grime of children left in charge of table chores. The bare bones of the table became a playground…memories connected with a table that has seen more than one hundred years of memories….always room for more.
When we had the table repaired years ago, the antique shop owner told us to love our table with beeswax. I had not been loving the table enough…
It thrills my soul to see the difference a long, cool drink of love can bring…
Waxing the table has never been a chore. I take my time and I enjoy the smells and the beauty and when it is all finished, I stand back and admire.
It is one of the joys of homemaking…
a dining room table in all it’s glory!
And just in time for Autumn!

You mean large families and large dining tables go together, right? 😉 We’ve had a dining table since we were married, we just haven’t always eaten every meal on it.
(I’m just being silly; not really correcting you.)
